art4ONE4all (for Rebecca)
This is an ongoing project in which I interview people I meet, discovering details about their lives. Every man and woman carries a story that can inspire. Rebecca was interviewed and became the inspiration for this piece. Her mother was killed in the U.S. military in a mysterious accident. Rebecca grew up in a poor neighborhood where crime ran rampant. Many times in her youth she feared for her life. At the age of 18 she joined the U.S. Army to get tough. At home she would wear her combat uniform in order to look tough. Throughout her life she had a desire to read and learn, but fear kept her from ever being able to get to that point. One day, in a military training, Rebecca lost her ability to hear: she went def. This piece is a small shelter made of books painted with Army-pattern digital camouflage Representative of Rebecca’s unrealized desires.
